Photons go to School is moved to the XXIX Regional Biobio Physics Olympiad

afiche_olimpiadas_14-323x500For the last 29 years, the Regional Olympiad in Physics in the BioBio region has been held, even in the face of earthquakes, disaster alerts or last minute changes. Annually, UdeC professors of the Physics Department prepare to make  science students in the region the protagonists  throughout the month of August, with the single priority of demonstrating their interest in this area of knowledge.

“In version 2014, the oldest scientific Olympiad of Chile includes talks and demonstrations of physical phenomena for 318 selected youngsters, as well as courses for the accompanying teachers, ” said Professor Luis Braga, organizer of the activity and a collaborator at our Center. In this mode, during four Saturdays during the Olympiad, our researchers will show the quantum erasure experiment “Photons go to School.”

Dr. Aldo Delgado is the researcher who is responsible for displaying the interactive experience both to students and educators. “The first Saturday (August 2) showed “Photons go to School” for teachers, with a pedagogical perspective to explain the objectives, contents and review of these.” The second Saturday (August 9), a demonstration was given to high school students,” he explained.

“There were several positive comments and the teachers were impressed. Many of them were interested in bringing this activity to their schools, and we hope to continue disseminating this initiative to children in the following Saturdays,” Dr. Delgado added. In previous years, CEFOP representation at the Physics Olympiad was given to Dr. José Aguirre, who gave a course of complementary Optics in 2013; Dr. Juan Pablo Staforelli who gave the final talk from 2013 on Optical tweezers; and in 2012, our Scientific Director, Dr. Carlos Saavedra, spoke about the work at CEFOP.

The Physics Olympiad in the Bio Bio Region was first thought of in 1986 as a place where students could test how much Physics they had learned. All physics Olympiads, both regional and national, which launched their versions in 1991 have grown. There also is a similar Ibero-American iniciative, which this year will take place in Paraguay and another international one, which will take place in India in 2015.
