The researcher gave a talk called “Design concepts and applications of readout integrated circuits (ROIC)” to researchers from Center for Optics and Photonics at University of Concepción.
Professor Payman Zarkesh-Ha has visited Universidad de Concepción. The academic shared with researchers from CEFOP their knowledge in his work about development of Readout Integrated Circuit (ROIC), especially in applications of the technology to the infrared television cameras.
Zarkesh-Ha is associate professor from the department of electrical and computer engineering at University of New Mexico (UNM). Zarkesh-Ha’s presentation, started with some of the basic concepts around the readout integrated circuit, which are using in infrared image recording systems, with importance on their practical uses and the challenge of design, in order to meet an specific goal. This can be through real examples of implementation that has already carried out the team develop which leading this area.
The scientific explained some of the active components that compose a ROIC and what are restrictions presented in its design, like noise, dynamic range, capacity, beside applications in visible light communication.
The researcher, with an extensive experience in academic research described the current situation in the field of scientific development at the United States. “Integrated circuits are readily available, because there are a lot of industries that produced them. This can’t be easily modified, because it is well managed and can not be changed.
Basically, the only thing that can be modified are basic parameters, that you can work on stage of integration. Then, in order to achieve more new things in circuits infrared cameras with ROIC, is that we needed to do a specific design. So, we’ve started to looking and working at the project to design and manufacture ROIC, specifically for something, for example, some information classification processes with data are not uniform, and other things that you can do with these circuits” explained.
As regards research financing that he leads, the professor said that it comes from public funds principally, as in most of the cases in country. “In the future, industry could be interested in acquiring these circuits, but now this is only research. We don’t have plan to sell them to companies in any place. In the United States this research field has been financed by the National Science Foundation (NSF), as the group case where I currently work. In this case, we don’t have extra funds that comes from industry and for the development of ROIC”, said.
The researcher emphasized the importance of his brief stay at our university. “The reason for visited University of Concepción, is the connection with Miguel Figueroa’s research; his work is closely related to mine. In fact, last time we were in touch, I was invited to come and give a talk on the subject of the ROIC, and also to have the opportunity to know the team that Miguel is part and share our experience with the staff at UNM . I think it would be a great opportunity if we can improve this collaboration. That is the reason why I am so interested in the University of Concepción “said the scientist.
The visit of Professor Zarkesh-Ha is framed in the context of research “Hardware-based image processing for infrared and hyperspectral cameras” -project Fondecyt number 1121010- led by Dr. Miguel Figueroa and Dr. Jorge Pezoa from CEFOP. The academic experienced at the UNM has the role of international expert. In addition, Figueroa said that Zarkesh-Ha, have plan, very soon, to establish at least one semester at the University and develop their advanced research, for which we are managing the necessary funds.
